Black Eagles through on penalty kicks

Beşiktaş 1-0 Liverpool (Penalty shoot-out:5-4)

The Black and Whites rewrote the Beşiktaş history by knocking the European giants Liverpool out of the Europa League tonight.

Spurred on by the packed crowd of over 60,000 non-stop cheering fans at the Ataturk Olimpiyat Stadium, the Black Eagles started with early pressure but failed to create any serious chances. As the game went on, the Reds slowed the Beşiktaş down and began threatening with counter-attacks. Beşiktaş keeper Cenk Gönen had to make a couple of diving saves to prevent Sterling and Sturridge from finding the net. The teams were scoreless heading into the intermission.

Beşiktaş opened the second half with a pair of long-range efforts from Serdar and Sosa, but they were unable to beat Liverpool keeper Mignolet. While Liverpool focused more defence, the Eagles kept pressing for the go-ahead goal with relentless attacks from the both flanks. Then came the 72nd minute, when sub Tolgay Arslan, whose long-range shot had just missed the target few minutes earlier, found the top corner of the net with a superb curling effort and sent the home fans into the dreamland . The Slaven Bilic’s men almost wrapped up the match with a minute left to go, but Demba Ba’s hard drive from inside the 6-yard box hit the bar and bounced back in. Since the Reds won the first leg 1-0, the teams had to play an extra 30 minutes.

Beşiktaş continued to be the better side in the extra time, but just couldn’t score that qualifying goal. However, their prayers were finally answered by the gods of football as they won the penalty shoot 5-4 and advanced to the next round of the Europa League. Thank you lads! You are the best!
