Eagles progress in Europa League despite late scare

Asteras Tripolis FC 2 – 2 Beşiktaş

Needing only a draw to qualify, the Black Eagles stayed in their own half early on and gave away some serious chances. After 15 minutes of pressure by the home side, Beşiktaş took the lead when Demba Ba volleyed home Gökhan Töre’s brilliant pass from inside the box. While the Greeks struggled to recover, Beşiktaş pushed for a second goal, but due to poor finishing, there were no more goals in the first half.

The Black Eagles refused to slow down in the second half as Gökhan Töre made it 2-0 for Beşiktaş from a 62nd-minute penalty-kick. Asteras pulled one back through Barrales’ header on 71 minutes, but worse than the goal, Beşiktaş had to carry on with ten men because Atiba Hutchinson was sent off for arguing with the referee. The shorthanded Beşiktaş conceded another goal in the 82nd-minute from Parra’s deflected shot, which caught goalkeeper Cenk the wrong foot, but the Eagles held their ground in closing moments to scrape out the point that would take them to the next round.
