Comments from Chairman Demirören

Following a sponsorship deal with Adidas, Beşiktaş Chairman Yıldırım Demirören shared his views on various current issues.

“We want to see Tayfur Havutçu managing our football team next season as well. He has been with the club for many years. We know him very well and what he is capable of. He is a good coach, and we have full trust in him. But its too early to commit ourselves. We will review his performance at the end of the season, and if everything is positive, we will sit down and talk to him. I have to admit bringing in new managers and starting all over each season have cost us a lot and not achieved much. We would rather have our own boy at the head of our team.
In regard to transfer offers to our foreign players, we have not received anything official yet. Besides, we have no intention of letting them go, and they have not expressed any desire to leave us. Bobo’s contract expires at the end of this season. He is been with us for five years. He was only 19 when we signed him. We are satisfied with his performance, but if he wants to go, we are not going to say “No.” Beşiktaş has never forced a player to stay against his own will.
When it comes to the team’s performance, we know we are having an up and down season and have not fully met the expectations of our fans. I will dwell on the reasons here, but let’s not forget, this is a new team, and it takes time to build a championship team. On the other hand, we are currently ranked 26th in the world and played 50 matches this season, more than any other Turkish team, and a record by any standards. We will keep the players who have fought for us the whole season while signing some more stars. I am sure you are going to see a much better Beşiktaş next season.
When I was in Spain, I met with Real Madrid’s Manager Jose twice. We discussed Beşiktaş, and he made some valuable recommendations of which I am not going to reveal them here. I will share them with our Board and Mr. Havutçu.
Our Spanish player Guti, told us the other day that he was not going anywhere because he was more than happy at Beşiktaş. He also asked us to make his intention public with a press conference. I don’t understand why you don’t believe us.
With this opportunity, I’d like to thank Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan and Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş for their support to our Inonu Stadium renovation project. As you may have already known, our plans have been approved by the Council of Monuments and Antiquities, but for some unknown reason, the Ministry of Culture is holding up the project. We want to build a high-tech stadium which will be the most visible symbol of Istanbul. I am sure the Minister got his facts wrong and hope he will give us the go-ahead without any without any further delay. Besides, our main rivals, Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe are already playing in their new stadiums. Isn’t it a double standard? I believe it is our right to demand such a project for our fans. Its financing is already secured, we can start tomorrow.”
